TOWER | June 16 & 17, 2012
Following in the footsteps of artistic luminaries Meredith Monk and the Kronos Quartet, Sympho has been commissioned by the Oliver Ranch Foundation to create an immersive, site-specific concert experience for The Tower, a monolithic eight-story, 80-foot tall sculpture and performance venue designed by Ann Hamilton. This concrete structure, which is 24 feet in diameter and located in the heart of California’s wine country, will embrace both performers and audience on its two parallel staircases, yielding a sonic environment designed to surprise and delight the ear and eye.
The event will feature music from the breadth of the Western tradition, as well as newly-commissioned work from composers Christopher Bono, Paul Haas, and Bora Yoon, played by Sympho under Haas’ direction. Stage Direction and Visual Design by Ruth Pongstaphone. Further details and ticketing information coming soon.

THE GREEN LAMA | January 29, 2012
On Sunday, January 29 at the Rubin Museum of Art, Sympho presented the world premiere of The Green Lama, a multimedia work by Paul Haas and John Hadfield, performed by the MAYA trio and Haas. The music was performed alongside projections of the second issue of the 1940s cult comic book The Green Lama, in which the wealthy playboy Jethro Dumont battles the ills of a great American metropolis using magic powers he acquired during a ten-year sojourn in Tibet. Narration (and WQXR host Elliott Forrest) was joined by Law and Order's Linus Roache as the voice of the Green Lama and Brian Cox—who appeared opposite Ralph Fiennes in Coriolanus—as master crook Willie the Sleeper. The program will also featured works by Toru Takemitsu, Kinan Azmeh, Robert Paterson, Ravi Shankar, John Hadfield, and Sayat Nova.
The concert was be presented by the Rubin Museum as part of their Hero, Villain, Yeti!: Tibet in Comics exhibition. Sympho collaborators MAYA— the trio of percussionist John Hadfield, harpist Bridget Kibbey, and flutist Sato Moughalian—are known for the performance of new music, music of different world cultures, and the incorporation of improvisations into their performances.
